Cardamom is known as the immature, dried fruit of the perennial plant, and it falls under the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). These fruits consist of the outer seed bearing that contains small brown seeds, characterized by their aromatic smell and sweet and pungent taste. It has two types, namely: green cardamom and black cardamom, and it is available in the market in multiple forms, such as: whole cardamom, ground cardamom, cardamom extract, and cardamom oil. In addition to belonging to the group of sweet spices, it is used to flavor sweets, baked goods, and coffee, especially in Arab countries.
Cardamom provides many health benefits, but there is not enough scientific evidence to prove its effectiveness. Among these benefits are the following:
- Reducing high blood pressure: Cardamom can be beneficial for people with high blood pressure. A study published in the Indian journal of biochemistry & biophysics in 2009 showed that consuming three grams of cardamom powder daily for 12 weeks significantly reduced blood pressure. The results also showed an increase in antioxidants by 90%.
- Maintaining the health of the liver: Cardamom consumption can positively affect the liver, as it contributes to the removal of toxins from the body, as it has long been consumed in traditional medicine for its detoxifying properties.
- Improving Urinary Disorders: It is believed that cardamom consumption can improve some cases of urinary disorders, and may help the body prevent conditions that cause various urinary disorders.
- Reducing intestinal spasms: Cardamom oil constitutes 5% of the total weight of the seeds, and a laboratory study published in the Journal of Pharmacological Research showed that this cardamom oil has an antispasmodic effect.
- Another benefit There is insufficient evidence of its effectiveness, and we mention the following: Alleviation of colds and other types of infections, constipation, coughing, epilepsy, and improvement in appetite.
Cardamom benefits for teeth
Cardamom was traditionally used to treat bad breath in some cultures, and a 2009 study published in Ethnobotanical Leaflets found that it has anti-bacterial properties against some types of bacteria that cause tooth decay, including Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus (scientific name: Staphylococcus aureus), and others.
Cardamom Weight Loss Advantages
Some preliminary and unconfirmed studies suggest that cardamom may contribute to weight loss. In a study published in the Journal of Diabetes & Metabolic Disorders in 2017, it included 80 overweight and pre-diabetic people. It was found that those who consumed 3 grams of green cardamom supplements had lower triglyceride levels and increased insulin sensitivity, but these results are uncertain, and more studies are still needed to confirm this benefit.
