!The only clock in the world that runs backwards

The only clock in the world that runs backwards! Of all the clocks in the world, the Bolivian clock that decorates the building of the Bolivian Legislative Assembly in Piazza Murillo, in the center of the capital, La Paz, has the distinction of being the only clock that turns its hands in the opposite direction! The Bolivian assembly clock numbers are arranged in reverse, as if you see their reflection in a mirror, so they work in a counterclockwise direction.

The only clock in the world that runs backwards!

 only watch in the world

The Bolivian Legislative Assembly building was built in the 1920s and was originally intended to be the Bolivian Central Bank. The building’s clock was normal until 2014, when the Bolivian parliament decided to reverse its hands and numbers to reflect the characteristics of the “southern” Bolivian people.

This strange modification was made to the clock to urge Bolivians to be proud of their heritage and to remind them that they are people who live in the south, not the north, as described by Bolivian Foreign Minister David Chuquiwanca. To better understand why, the Bolivian people are made up of many indigenous tribes who respect their past, such as the Quechua and Aymara, who see their past as a future and their future as a past, i.e., in reverse. Like the Bolivian watch, it works with the same reverse mechanism as the original Bolivian heritage.

There is another reason for the clock to run in reverse with Bolivia in the southern hemisphere. Ancient sundials work differently in the northern hemisphere than in the southern hemisphere. The sundial’s shadow moves clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere. That makes the La Paz watch the natural movement of the shadows in the southern hemisphere.

But this is not always the case in Bolivia when it comes to shaded sundials. Bolivia is located so close to the equator that in the summer months the shadow of its sundial turns clockwise (from left to right), and this continues for several months of the year.
