The device will be powered by a set of custom silicon chips from Google and will use external cameras to combine computer graphics with video feeds from the real world. According to the report, some of the Google Pixel team are working on the device.

The device is still in the early stages of development and will compete with planned AR headsets from Meta (formerly Facebook) and Apple, although it’s unclear whether the Google AR headset will be a Pixel-branded headgear.

According to a New York Times report, the initiative is the consequence of Google’s purchase of North, a leader in human-computer interfaces and smart eye wear. Several leaders and engineers who previously worked with North are now part of Google’s hardware and services division, which is responsible for the Pixel, Nest, and other devices, and this organisational shift makes sense before a consumer product, as well as the team developing the augmented reality operating system, Under Devices and Services.

According to The Verge, Google plans to release its Project Iris AR headphones by 2024.
