Nona Gaprindashvili Sues Netflix Over Queen’s Gambit

Chess legend Nona Gaprindashvili Sues Netflix over the series “Queen’s Gambit,” in which she obtained a ruling in her case, which she filed months ago, accusing them of being biassed against women and showing in the series that she did not play with males in her long career in the game.

According to the new report published by Variety newspaper, Nonna Gabrindashvili emerged as a great chess player in the Soviet Union in the 1960s, and she obtained a new ruling in her case against Netflix, where the judge said that Gabrindashvili’s argument is reasonable, stressing that literary works are subject to defamation suits.

According to the BBC report, chess legend Nouna is suing Netflix for defamation after it was stated in the series that she had never played men, as in fact she had faced no less than 59 players, including 28 players in one match and 10 senior masters, and she beat them all. That was in 1968.

This was the opposite of what was mentioned in the series, which published incorrect facts to attribute the credit to the character “Beth Harmon”. Gabrindashvili is trying to get $5 million in compensation and an apology from Netflix for publishing false information.

Gabrindashvili is a legendary chess player. She was born in 1941 in the Georgian town of Zugidi. She started playing chess at the age of 13, became the world champion in chess at the age of 20, and is considered the first woman to be awarded the title of “Chess Master.”
