NASA says International Space Station will retire in 2031

NASA says International Space Station will retire in 2031…NASA confirmed in a new transition plan released this week that the International Space Station (ISS) will operate until 2030 and then sink into the Pacific Ocean’s farthest point in 2031. The International Space Station, which was launched in 1998, will be “de-orbited” in January 2031, according to the space agency’s budget estimates.

Once out of orbit, the space station will descend dramatically before landing at Point Nemo, which is about 2,700 kilometres from Earth and has become known as the Space Cemetery-the final resting place of decommissioned space stations and old satellites.

The area where the space station will land is also known as the “inaccessible oceanic pole” or “the uninhabited South Pacific”, and the area around the space cemetery is known for its complete lack of human activity. NASA said it is “largely the furthest place from any human civilization you can find.”

This week, the space agency announced a new transition plan for low-Earth orbit science. Furthermore, NASA signed agreements with three private companies to launch commercial space stations for use by both private companies and government astronauts.

These new commercial space stations will be launched by Blue Origin, Nanoracks LLC, and Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation, and they are expected to be operational by late 2020, before the International Space Station plunges into the sea, NASA said.

Until then, the International Space Station will remain occupied with experiments being conducted on behalf of NASA researchers and private contractors. “The International Space Station is entering its third and most productive decade as a leading science platform in microgravity.”
