Thousands luxury cars continue to burn on a cargo ship in the Atlantic
Estimates by the Russell Group indicated that the freighter Felicity Ace carries cars worth $400 million, many of which are luxury cars from the likes of Porsche, Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini.
Volkswagen, which owns the brands, hasn’t said how many of each model are on the Felicity ES, but media reports say there are about 1,000 Porsches and 189 Bentleys on the ship.
Last Wednesday, the ship caught fire near the Azores, 900 miles west of Portugal, while sailing from Emden, Germany, to Davisville, Rhode Island.
Shortly after the fire erupted, the crew of 22 was safely evacuated. MOL Ship Management, located in Singapore, said on Monday that it thought the ship had been burning for five days. The firefighting boats are presently on their route to the area and are anticipated to arrive at the ship later this week.
Reports indicate that the fire was ignited by lithium-ion batteries on electric vehicles on board the ship. One of the batteries may have broken down, which could have caused the fire. This needs to be confirmed.
Commenting on the incident, Suki Pacey of the Russell Group said: “These figures once again demonstrate the instability of global supply chains.”
“The incident comes at a bad time for global carmakers who are in the middle of a supply chain crisis sourcing semiconductors, resulting in new delays for new cars. An event like this will not do a great deal to instill trust with consumers,” Pacey added.
