According to Britain’s Sky News, Gray sued Perry in 2014, claiming she stole eight notes from his rap song “Joyful Noise.”

In 2019, a Los Angeles court judge agreed to award the singer $2.8 million in damages, to be paid by the singer and her album label.

But the ruling was overturned by another court in 2020, adjudicating the case by clearing Katie of violating any independent music rights.

Finally, the Court of Appeals upheld the overturning of the first ruling, ruling that Gray was not entitled to damages for copyright infringement and that the contested musical style consisted of musical elements that lacked the originality necessary for copyright protection.
