The painting, measuring 40 inches (100 cm) by 40 inches and dating from 1964, has been described by Christie’s as one of the rarest and most beautiful pictures ever made, and is known as “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn”.

It is expected to be the most expensive painting of the 20th century ever sold at auction, and the proceeds from the sale will go to the Thomas and Doris Amann Foundation in Zurich, Switzerland, a foundation that aims to help children with educational and health care programmes.

After Marilyn Monroe died at the age of 36, the painter began creating silk paintings of her, producing five portraits of her, all of identical size and with various coloured backgrounds.

According to legend, four of them were mutilated after an artist named Dorothy Podber asked if she could photograph a group of portraits, and the painter agreed, thinking she meant photographing the works, but she instead pulled out a pistol and fired a shot at a portrait of Marilyn Monroe.
