The French magazine added that when it was completed in 1889, the Eiffel Tower was expected to last for 20 years before being damaged or collapsing, noting that after 133 years, the tower is still standing, as a result of the constant maintenance it is subjected to. The magazine quoted an official in the tower as saying that “If Gustave Eiffel visited the place, he would have a heart attack.”

The tower official revealed that Gustave Eiffel said, after the construction of the tower, that monitoring rust and stopping its spread was the biggest challenge for the longevity of the tower, and indicated that it would need to be painted every seven years.

The magazine said that the tower needs a complete overhaul while officials are currently only ostensibly beautifying it in preparation for the Olympic Games to be hosted in Paris in 2024.

It confirmed that the tower will undergo a 60 million euro repainting process, but this process will only address 5% of the tower’s rust problems.

The tower receives about 6 million visitors a year, making it the fourth most visited site in France after Disneyland, the Louvre Museum, and Versailles Palace.

This iron tower is 324 meters high, weighs 7,300 tons, contains an estimated 2.5 million nails, and was built using molten iron known for its purity and high quality.
