Director Joseph Kosinsky spoke about Why Kelly McGillis Didn’t Return to Top Gun : Maverick, stressing that her character had not been a part of the script since work on Part Two began, and said, “I didn’t want every storyline to always be looking backwards. It was important to introduce some new characters.“

McGillis played Tom’s mistress in the first part , but in Top Gun: Maverick, Jennifer Connolly plays his new girlfriend “Benny Benjamin”, who does not appear in the first part but is mentioned as the “daughter of an admiral” whom the hero has dated in the past.

Kelly McGillis commented about not being invited to work on Top Gun: Maverick in 2019, saying, ““I’m old, and I’m fat, and I look age-appropriate for what my age To me, I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff.“

Top Gun: Maverick screens at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, and hits theaters on May 27.
