This is also because the star has Ukrainian roots, as his maternal grandmother, Helene Indenbirken, was born in Ukraine’s Odessa, but emigrated to Germany with her parents in 1917.

Leonardo was raised by his mother, Irmelin, and grandmother, with whom he had a close relationship. Both accompanied him to the premieres of his films, including Titanic and The Man in the Iron Mask.

The announcement came from the International Visegrad Fund, a Visegrad Group organisation aiming at providing financial assistance for international activities that encourage Eastern European development.
